1. Scholarship Name & Memorial Statement
This Nancy Riche Memorial Scholarship is established in loving memory of Nancy Riche, a fierce and dedicated trade unionist who believed deeply in education, solidarity, and the power of workers and the union movement.
Nancy Riche began her career as a vocational instructor. She served as Chairperson of the NAPE Women’s Committee before becoming the Director of Education, Research and Communication at NAPE. She then went on to become the Vice President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, the Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), the Executive Vice-President and later Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress, the Vice President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, and President of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party.
2. Sponsor Acknowledgement
The annual scholarship is sponsored by Higgins Insurance, Part of Orbit Insurance Services. The sponsor logo will be included in all formal correspondence/promotional materials. https://www.higginsinsurance.ca
3. Scholarship Value
Amount: $2,500
Number of Awards: One per year
4. Eligibility Criteria
The applicant must meet all of the following:
Residency: Must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Union Affiliation: Must be either:
- A member in good standing of a union affiliated with the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, or
- A dependent (child, legal ward) of a member in good standing of an affiliated union.
Educational Status: Must be enrolled or accepted for full-time or part-time studies at a recognized public or union-run post-secondary institution (university, college, or recognized trade school in Canada) for the current/upcoming academic year.
Video Requirement: Must submit a short video as described below.
5. Application Requirements
A complete application package includes:
- Completed application form
- A 2 to 5‑minute video on the annual topic chosen by the Federation of Labour.
Video Guidelines
Length: 2 to 5 minutes.
Annual Topic: Each year the Federation of Labour will announce a theme linked to labour rights, social justice, solidarity, and/or the legacy of Nancy Riche.
Format: Submit a link to the video hosted on a platform like YouTube (unlisted/private), cloud drive, or physical drive to fed@nlfed.ca
Content: The video must be original and created by the applicant. It can be a personal monologue, documentary-style, interview, or creative storytelling.
Judging focus: Clarity of message, connection to the labour movement/Newfoundland and Labrador context, creativity, and authenticity. A well‑lit phone video is perfectly acceptable.
6. Application Deadline & Submission
Deadline: September 30
How to Submit: Via email or through an online form on the Federation’s website. All materials must be received by the deadline.
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
7. Selection Process
Judging will be done by the NLFL Education Committee who will make a recommendation to the President for approval.
8. Terms & Conditions
The recipient agrees to allow their name, photo, and video (or excerpts) to be used by the Federation of Labour and Higgins Insurance in promotional materials, including social media, with appropriate consent.
The video remains the applicant’s property, but submission grants the Federation of Labour and sponsor a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use it for scholarship-related communications.
No feedback will be provided on unsuccessful applications.
