Knowledge is power!
The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour (NLFL) is happy to announce that we will be hosting a Labour School from November 4 – 6 at The Wilds Resort in Holyrood.
Purpose:
· Provide front-line union activists with additional education, training, tools, and skills to better represent and advocate for their members
· Build solidarity between unions / union activists.
Labour School Highlights
The Labour School will feature a series of engaging speakers, educational workshops, and skill building sessions.
Workshops include (Note: subject to change)
Real Talk, Tough Conversations
Participants will review and practice the basic skills for keeping their cool while navigating tough conversations with folks that disagree with us, or who are being influenced by misinformation. These are useful skills for the workplace, the union and the kitchen table.
From Myths to Power: A Worker’s Guide to the Economy
Participants will learn the basics of how the economy works, how to push back on and debunk economic myths, and how to apply this knowledge to core union work like bargaining, member engagement, and policy advocacy.
Member Mapping
Participants will learn and practice techniques for mapping their unions and workplaces. They will learn how to integrate member maps into strategic planning or organizing campaigns. Drawing on Kevin Millsip’s “Go, Listen, Build” theory for member organizing, in order to “Go” to workers, we must first know who they are, where they work, and what they care about. Participants will leave the workshop with a basic map of their membership and strategies on how to integrate this map into their union’s workplan and strategies.
Grassroots Leadership in Action
Provides an overview of the importance and benefit of in-person organizing, with a focus on canvassing on issues important to your union, your community and the labour movement. Participants will develop their organizing and leadership skills with the aim of empowering them to host future in-person actions.
