It’s time for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to make it easier for workers to join a union by implementing card-check certification.

Card-check, or single-step, certification simply means that if a clear majority of workers in a workplace support forming a union – and sign authorization cards declaring this – they can form one.

Currently in Newfoundland and Labrador workers are forced through a secondary formal vote to unionize in their workplace, even when a majority of workers have signed membership cards showing their support.

Through card-check certification, our Government would protect workers from intimidation, threats and bullying from anti-union employers and their agents, helping to bring democracy to workplaces by respecting workers’ right to unionize.

Working people should be able to thrive, not just survive. It’s time for our government to step up and offer a plan to tackle inflation, ban price gouging and tax excess profits. Workers are demanding action to:

• Raise the minimum wage to a living wage;
• Eliminate the regressive sugar tax and end food deserts in our communities;
• Introduce rent control, house those without shelter and renovate and build more affordable public housing; and
• Tax banks and corporations so that they pay their fair share.

What’s it like for you? Ever have to go to work sick because you couldn’t afford to stay home? Have you done the math some weeks and figured out you didn’t even make minimum wage, let alone a living wage? Had a legitimate complaint your employer wouldn’t help you with?

The NL Federation of Labour wants to hear about your experiences of working for app-based companies. Most ride-hail and food delivery workers are left out of essential workplace protections, including compensation for injuries on the job and sick days. The app companies they work for are exploiting loopholes and don’t pay their full share into the programs Newfoundlanders and Labradorians rely on, like workers’ compensation, the health care system, employment insurance and the Canada Pension Plan.

Sign the petition to demand our provincial government close loopholes in legislation and ensure gig workers are provided:

• fair pay for all the hours they work,
• health and safety protections,
• paid sick days,
• compensation for injuries on the job,
• holiday pay, and
• transparency and accountability from gig companies.
